{"id":17397,"date":"2024-11-30T09:08:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-30T09:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/e-suddi.com\/?p=17397"},"modified":"2024-11-30T09:08:35","modified_gmt":"2024-11-30T09:08:35","slug":"lingayat-religion-an-over-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/e-suddi.com\/?p=17397","title":{"rendered":"Lingayat religion -an over view"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lingayat religion -an over view<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basaveshwara established Lingayat religion in the 12th century in order to free the society from certain ill practices prevalent in the Hindu religion at that time. As such, it is\u00a0 entirely different\u00a0 from the Hindu religion.\u00a0 The structure of\u00a0 Lingayat religion, suggests that it is intrinsically an Independent religion like Christianity, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, Islam and Parsi.<\/p>\n<p>The Lingayats, under Basavanna&#8217;s leadership, were the first to establish Anubhava Mantapa, an open forum for free thinking. This can be now recognised and regarded as the first democratic parliament of the world.<\/p>\n<p>It is moulded on free thinking, liberty, equality, fraternity, kindness towards all beings, empathy and all democratic principles, right from its inception, and thus has all the merits to be recognised as a religion on par with the best religions of the world.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is strange and unfortunate that the Lingayat religion, an altogether reform based movement started by Sri Basavanna, couldn&#8217;t get the official status of a religion. This is in spite of the fact that several executive, judicial and public institutions at the Governmental level have unanimously agreed to regard this as a religion and have even recommended to the Governments to grant the religion status at various times.<\/p>\n<p>It is also discouraging and disappointing to know that the demand for separate religion status for Lingayats is leading to divergent views within the community from religious heads and political leaders.<\/p>\n<p>It may be worth mentioning here the supporting evidences and facts related to the demands made earlier at different levels.<br \/>\n1. During pre-independent days, the Chief Census Officer of the Bombay Province under the British rule, Reginald Edward Enthoven, had explained how Lingayats were different from Hindus.<br \/>\n2. \u201cIn the fifth edition of \u2018Encyclopaedia of Religion of Ethics\u2019 by R.E. Enthovan published in 1951, pages 69 to 75 have information on Lingayats, where the author says Lingayats are not Hindus,\u201d<br \/>\n3. \u201cIn the book \u2018Hindu manners, customs and ceremonies\u2019 written by Abbe J.A. Dubois, published in 1821, it is mentioned that Lingayats\u2019 philosophy is different from Hindus. A British Survey committee (on fixing age limit for electorate) headed by Lord South Borough had listed Lingayats as a separate community in 1919.\u201d<br \/>\n4. Supreme Court judgement (AIR 1966. SC 1190: 1966-1 SCR 134 dated 14\/1\/1966) delivered by Justice Gajendragadkar P.V. in which the judge has said \u201cBuddha started Buddhism, Mahaveera founded Jainism, Basava became the founder of Lingayat religion\u2026.\u201d (in paragraph 264).<br \/>\n5. \u201cIn Bombay High Court Case No. (1943) 45 UMLR 992 dated 12\/2\/1943 Judge Divatia has said: Lingayat faith is altogether independent of Hindu religion, which is primarily based on the authoritativeness of the Vedas and Varnashrama. And Lingayat religion does not accept Vedas and Varnashrama and repudiates the distinction of castes. It is said to be non-Hindu,\u201d<br \/>\n6. The Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Davangere in 1940, passed a resolution saying \u201cLingayats are not Hindus\u201d. Slain researcher M.M. Kalburgi has mentioned it in his \u201cMarga\u201d series of research works. Kalburgi.<br \/>\n7. Barristor M S Sardar was happened to be the president of Akhil Bharat *Veerashaiva Mahasabha 1940 -1941 .He strongly urged to change the name of organisations from Veerashaiva to Lingayat<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these sincere attempts in the past steretching to several decades, it is significant to note that the state level highest body Veerashaiva Mahasabha in Karnataka made serious repeated attempts to get Veerashaiva\/Lingayat mentioned as a separate religion during the census. However these pleas were rejected by the Registrar General of India in 2013. However, at times the Government of Karnataka did respond in a proactive way. It appointed Justice Sri Nagamohandas, Commissioner in 2018\u00a0 to submit the report for the Independent religion status and monority status for Lingayats. Accordingly, Justice Sri. Nagamohandas\u00a0 submitted the report. The then Govt of Karnataka called cabinet meeting and took decision to recommend Central Govt and Minority Authority to grant minority status to Lingayats. While keeping its promise, the state Government submitted its cabinet decision and recommendations,\u00a0 the Central Govt and Minority Authority\u00a0 rejected\u00a0 the request.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 6 years, there are no further efforts to appeal or to continue the movement . Officials have kept saying to all Lingayats that Cabinet decision has not refused the submitted application. It seems, the Central Govt has also asked for modification in the submitted application.<\/p>\n<p>In the war of ego between terry the officials and the activists of the Lingayat organisations, the officials may apear to be the the rulers though in true sense the activists\u00a0 are the winners.<\/p>\n<p>In the present context, there is a need to support the appeal and the movement fighting for\u00a0 the religion status for Lingayat with relevant\u00a0 documents.
